About an hour from Dallas’ north suburbs and less than three hours south of Oklahoma City, you’ll find Tanglewood Golf Resort. Tanglewood is located in Pottsboro, TX, on Lake Texoma, and is a recreation-lover’s paradise. Tanglewood boasts an array of world-class amenities and activities, and is a welcome retreat for those seeking to get away and enjoy a blend of luxury, natural beauty, and tranquility.

As a guest at Tanglewood Resort, you’ll have a variety of premier accommodations.  Choose from guest rooms with beautiful views of Lake Texoma or villas that are spacious and fully equipped with all the trappings of home. Regardless of your choice, you’ll find each one relaxing, comfortable, and rife with amenities. And they are all just steps away from almost everything the resort offers.

Tanglewood’s hotel accommodations feature newly refurbished rooms equipped with a king or double queen beds, a microwave, a lounge chair, a mini-fridge, a desk, and a flat screen TV. Other amenities include a coffee maker, an iron, and a hair dryer. We stayed in a massive one-bedroom villa with big-screen TVs, a working gas fireplace, and a large jacuzzi bathtub! There was also a coffee maker with complimentary coffee! Each unit is beautifully furnished with everything you could ever need in a golf vacation villa. If you don’t want to leave the pets at home or, like me, have trouble finding a sitter, Tanglewood has a limited number of pet-friendly accommodations. Check with the front desk as restrictions may apply.

Tanglewood Resort has three dining venues. The 19th Hole Grill, located at the clubhouse, is a great place to gather with friends after your round, relax with your favorite beverage, grab a bite to eat, and rehash your round.

The Lakeside Restaurant offers delicious breakfast fare, and at night you’ll find a very diverse menu with entrees like Lasagna Bolognese, Creole Shrimp and Grits, steaks, and seafood. They have a full-service bar and several signature cocktails. The Lakeside Restaurant is open to the public, and reservations are recommended.

Located adjacent to the outdoor pool, the Tanglewood Bar & Grill offers the perfect blend of great food, sports entertainment, and relaxation. Enjoy a drink from the full liquor bar while you enjoy the stunning views of the pool, or choose something from their savory menu. Selections include a variety of eclectic salads, sandwiches, and burgers. There are also multiple big-screen TVs, so you can catch your favorite team in action.

One amenity that brings a lot of guests to the resort is the Arnold Palmer-designed championship golf course. Palmer teamed with renowned architect Ralph Plummer to design the original golf course at Tanglewood Resort and opened it for play in 1970. It’s a fun and challenging layout that offers five sets of tees and can be played anywhere from the Forward Tees at 5,017 yards to the Championship Tees at 6,993 yards. For the most part, fairway landing areas off the tee are wide open, and while sand bunkers don’t seem to be plentiful, they seem to be strategically placed, and the water and wind play a big part.

The course features lush Bermuda fairways that lead to beautiful Diamond Zyosia greens. Tanglewood was the first full-length golf course in the country to install eco-friendly Diamond Zoysia grass. This Zyosia hybrid grass was developed by renowned turf expert Dr. Milt Engelke and his team at Texas A&M and thrives in the Texas summer heat with little rainfall. As a result, Tanglewood has some of the best greens in the state.

If you’re playing from the back tees, the first two holes can be a tough way to start. These par 4s play 414 and 444 yards respectively. Move up to the Middle Tees and they’re a manageable 351 and 357 yards. I didn’t run into any trouble off the tees and was able to get off to a good start. The 6th hole is the first par 5 and is a carbon copy of the dogleg left, 2nd hole, only considerably longer. Bunkers on either side near the green will keep you honest. There’s a good chance to go low here!

There’s a noticeable elevation change on the 376-yard, par-4, 9th hole. From an elevated tee box, you’ll play downhill towards a dogleg left and then uphill to the green. Be sure to hit an extra club on approach.

Number 18 is a fun finishing hole. It’s a sweeping dogleg right par 5 that plays 437 yards from the Middle Tees. Be sure to keep your tee shot left as there is a large lake that catches balls hit right. A good drive will leave a decision to go for the green in two, although it may be a tough ask. The green plays back uphill and is guarded in front by a couple of deep, nasty pot bunkers. Approach shots that don’t quite reach the green have a good chance of rolling back.

In the event you run out of daylight hours to settle your bets on the golf course, you can carry on indoors on Tanglewood’s golf simulator. Pull up one of the preprogrammed courses and hit away. You can also use it to help improve some of those shots that cost you money!

Over the years, Tanglewood Resort has hosted golf events for organizations like the Texas A&M Commerce Lion Invitational for both men and women, and large corporate events for the Salesmanship Club of Dallas and McCraw Oil Company. When you choose Tanglewood for your next golf event, they’ll do everything to ensure the event runs smoothly and take care of all the details like cart assignments and scoring.

Tanglewood has a lot to offer non-golfers. For starters, pickleballers can enjoy a lively game on one of the resort’s eight new pickleball courts. Then, there’s Lake Texoma, where you can spend the day Striper fishing, water skiing, paddle boarding, boating, or just soaking in some rays. If you prefer a swimming pool, Tanglewood has three outdoor pools, an indoor pool, and a hot tub. Grab a workout in the fitness center or take an e-bike out for a spin. For guests in the mood to relax and unwind, pay a visit to the Tranquility Spa & Salon. As the night progresses, head up to the Tower Whiskey Bar for live music, libations, and a panoramic view of Lake Texoma!

Tanglewood Resort is a great place to get away, relax, and take in all that the Lake Texoma region has to offer. If you’re a golfer, it’s even better. For more information or to book your next round, stay, or event, call (609) 438-2929 or visit www.tanglewoodresort.com.

The Golfin’ Guy aka David (or Dave, but never Davey) Theoret grew up in Southwestern Ontario, Canada, where it was naturally assumed he would play hockey. Beginning at the age of 3 and continuing into his late 30's, he did just that. However, after one too many pucks to the head, he realized that golf was a lot easier on the body and took the game up. Whoever said hockey players were slow? Since that time, golf has become his passion – just ask Belinda. From 2003 until 2009, David ran the sales and marketing department of TravelGolf Media and took his team to over $1M in annual advertising revenue. While at TravelGolf, an editor told him he had a flair for writing and the lightbulb came on. He started writing articles about anything golf related: courses, destinations, resorts, shoes, apparel, equipment and training aids and sending them to websites and magazines. At first, his articles were picked up by a few golf websites and magazines, but the number steadily grew – enough that he could call it a career. Most days he’s on a course somewhere, either working or playing. Actually, to him playing IS work. Occasionally you’ll find him on the practice range reinforcing bad habits. David plays to a 12 handicap - unless there is money involved in which case it goes considerably higher. He currently resides in Fairfield Glade, TN with his wife Belinda and their two "kids," Duncan and Paisley.
