Jay’s Tee Box

There’s something about fall that makes golfers want to squeeze every last drop out of the season. Maybe it’s the cooler temperatures, the changing colors, or that unmistakable feeling that winter is waiting just around the corner. Whatever the reason, fall is when we start thinking about where we’ve been, where we still want to go, and – most importantly – where we’re going to play next.  That’s exactly what we had in mind when putting together this issue of Midwest Golfing Magazine.

Our cover story takes us to one of the most remarkable golf destinations in the country: Big Cedar Golf in the Southwest Missouri Ozarks. With courses designed by some of the biggest names in the game and an atmosphere that blends world-class golf with an unforgettable resort experience, Big Cedar has become much more than a golf trip – it’s a destination golfers need to experience for themselves. And with the addition of Cliffhangers, the excitement surrounding Big Cedar continues to reach new heights.

From Missouri, we head west to Mesquite, Nevada, for a look at Wolf Creek, a course that has earned a reputation for being as visually dramatic as it is challenging. Then we travel back to the Midwest to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and Island Resort & Casino, where golf continues to evolve with the opening of the new nine-hole Cedar Course, which began preview play this August. It’s another reason to put Island Resort & Casino on your golf-travel radar.

Speaking of new, Breezy Point Resort near Brainerd, Minnesota, is poised to open two par-3 experiences – Ace Valley Golf & Social Club and Tradition 10 – in the summer of 2027. Editor-in-Chief Glen Turk prepared a preview article as he looks forward to visiting the property this fall.

And if you’re already thinking about escaping the Midwest beyond Mesquite this winter, we have you covered. Brunswick Islands, North Carolina, offers a compelling mix of coastal scenery, laid-back Southern charm, and plenty of golf, while Las Vegas National provides a fascinating look at a historic Las Vegas course that has played an important role in the city’s golf story.

We also return to Northern Michigan for a journey through BOYNE Golf, one of the Midwest’s most enduring and impressive golf destinations. Add in our Business Profile on PXG, the latest news and happenings in Chip Shots, another insightful Pro Page with Daniel Romero, plus our never duplicated 21st Annual Editor’s Choice Awards, and we think this Fall Issue offers something for every golfer.

So as the leaves begin to turn and another golf season starts winding down, don’t look at fall as the end. Look at it as the beginning of planning your next great golf adventure.

Make Some Birdies,

Jay Royle, Publisher

Glen Turk is a Wisconsin native who has been the Senior Writer/Editor of Midwest Golfing Magazine since 2006. Besides being an avid golfer, Glen enjoys traveling, music, and cheering on the finest professional sports team of all-time, the Green Bay Packers. Glen’s ultimate golf goal is to play in all fifty states and currently he is more than half way there. His other dream, albeit far-fetched, it to record an ace in all seven states of our distribution area. Thanks to an ace in Illinois in 2015, and one in Michigan in 2016, he has three down, four to go!
