   Jay’s Tee Box

I love this time of year because it is filled with hope and promise. The hope is to have the best golf year of your life and so a promise must be made now to do everything in your power to make that happen. The great news is thanks to our intrepid band of staff reporters, the 2025 Golf Show Issue of MGM can serve as your guide to a myriad of bucket list options across the nation.

Amazingly, this year marks our 23rd anniversary of the magazine, and we truly believe we are just getting started. Editor Glen Turk and Lead Staff Writer Matt Tevsh have been with us since almost the start, and their combined 35+ years’ experience is accentuated with this issue.

Our cover feature takes us to the Northern Michigan paradise that is BOYNE Golf. 11 dynamic courses spread out over three unique resorts are only a starting point. Glen’s feature is a must read as the Boyne staff continues to build upon their flawless reputation as they not only debuted a new short course, Doon Brae, last year, but their award-winning Heather Course is set to host the inaugural Great Lakes Championship on the Epson Tour coming this June.

MGM pivots to another Michigan multi-course stalwart in Shanty Creek Resort, located in Belaire near picturesque Torch Lake. With 90 holes spread over five championship courses and multiple lodging options, Shanty Creek is an ideal stop for families and buddies trips alike according to Matt Tevsh.

The “Magic Mitten” that is Michigan continues to shine downstate at Tullymore Resort in Stanwood, which is a stone’s throw from Ferris State and Central Michigan universities. Glen Turk was fortunate to spend two days there last summer and came away thoroughly impressed with their entire operation.

And since you’re reading this issue in February, MGM always wants to offer a few travel ideas for those looking to get out of our pesky Midwest winter. I can personally think of no better place to head to this March or April than the great state of Alabama. Whether you want to tackle the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail or the Gulf Coast, we’ve got you covered.

Our Contributing Editor Deb Patton experienced Nemacolin Resort in Pennsylvania last October after the property was named one of the Top 50 Destinations for Women by Golfweek. After you read her synopsis, it’s clear that Nemacolin is worthy of that lofty honor.

Besides all of those great travel features we also take a deep dive into Potawatomi Casino Hotel in Milwaukee after their massive renovation last year and a business profile on Swag Golf in Northbrook, Illinois, who just moved into their new headquarters.

Finally, an Issue of MGM wouldn’t be complete without Chip Shots, Paul Seifert’s The Best of The Midwest, The Must Haves, Michael Crowley’s Pro Page, and Turk’s Takes.

     Make Some Birdies,

     Jay Royle, Publisher

Glen Turk is a Wisconsin native who has been the Senior Writer/Editor of Midwest Golfing Magazine since 2006. Besides being an avid golfer, Glen enjoys traveling, music, and cheering on the finest professional sports team of all-time, the Green Bay Packers. Glen’s ultimate golf goal is to play in all fifty states and currently he is more than half way there. His other dream, albeit far-fetched, it to record an ace in all seven states of our distribution area. Thanks to an ace in Illinois in 2015, and one in Michigan in 2016, he has three down, four to go!
