On a day where most of the game’s top players struggled, Rickie Fowler cruised through his morning round by making 7 birdies without a bogey to post a 7-under 65 at Erin Hills during the first round of the 117th U.S. Open. Fowler’s 7-under score tied Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf’s score in relation to par during the opening round of the 1980 U.S. Open.

World numbers 1 through 3, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, and Jason Day, combined to shoot 18 over, with Day needing to make a 15 foot birdie on No.18 to post 79.

Wisconsin’s own Steve Stricker shot a steady 1-over 73 to stay in contention moving into round two on Friday.

His other dream, albeit far-fetched, it to record an ace in all seven states of our distribution area. Thanks to an ace in Illinois in 2015, and one in Michigan in 2016, he has three down, four to go!
