Summertime has always been my favorite time to hit the links in the Midwest. Longer days and warmer temperatures give the local and traveling golfer the chance to be a dew sweeper, a 36-hole-a-day player, or my favorite, a twilight king.
No matter when you like to play, Midwest Golfing Magazine has the where covered. We begin with our cover feature on Island Resort and Casino in Harris, Michigan. As Editor Glen Turk reveals, the property has used Sweetgrass Golf Club winning the 2022 Golf Course Owners of America Course of The Year Award as motivation to make the entire golfer experience even better.
Obviously, I am biased, but we sure love our golf in my home state of Wisconsin. That’s why I am thrilled to introduce two Badger State features that are new to Midwest Golfing Magazine. First, staff writer Matt Tevsh got to experience Par 4 and Par 5 Resorts in Wautoma and Mishicot respectively. Both are under the same great ownership group and provide golfers with affordable stay and play options and immaculate course conditions. Next, Glen Turk had the chance to visit Edgerton and Janesville, Wisconsin which are golf hubs in Dane and Rock Counties. Glen came away thoroughly impressed with the region’s love of the game and quality of public tracks.
Speaking of quality public courses in Wisconsin, Sand Valley Resort in Rome is home to three remarkable championship layouts with one more on the way. We have been honored to chronicle their meteoric rise from the start, and this year is no different. Their latest gem, The Lido, was born out of Artificial Intelligence technology, and Sedge Valley looks to redefine that a premium layout doesn’t have to fit into a par-72 mold.
Did I mention Wisconsin is bursting with upper echelon golf destinations? Trappers Turn has also been a long-time friend of MGM, and as Matt Tevsh reports, the Wisconsin Dells property is experiencing another break-out year. Plus, Glen Turk highlights the 54-hole wonder that is Destination Geneva National Resort in Lake Geneva. Finally, we are proud to feature Potawatomi Hotel & Casino in Milwaukee and all their ongoing renovation projects once again.
Even though our title says Midwest Golfing Magazine, we pride ourselves in finding great travel destinations for Midwest players when the weather finally worsens. To that end, we highly recommend heading to Monkey Island, Oklahoma and the incomparable Shangri-La Resort. Their latest amenity, The Battlefield Par-3, is sure to be a showstopper, and matches perfectly with their on-property military theme.
